Opening protected by BitLocker NTFS Drives in Windows Vista or XP?

I tried the Microsoft tool to protect BitLocker drive "Go to drive BitLocker, but only for FAT formatted disk. It does not recognize an NTFS formatted external hard drive.

BitLocker is an absurdity. Once you understand I strongly suggest working to save all your files, then encrypt with TrueCrypt drive before copying the files again. TrueCrypt works well in multiple operating systems.
