Efficient and cheap / free software and / or hardware configuration for the mass transfer data from the tower of the laptop?

I'm looking for some suggestions for other 80-100 GB of data from my tower to my laptop. I try to avoid to pay $ 50 for a program fit with a special USB cable. Also, do not have an external hard drive and I will not be able to take some time. Should I try to FTP? If you enter a P2P program, two counts (assuming my connection speed is high enough)? USB direct (without the USB cable)? eSATA (If yes, how)? Extract from my PC hard drive and connect it to my laptop and use it as a time out? Freeware? Thoughts? Suggestions? Thank you: D

An Ethernet cable is probably the best choice (make sure you have a twisted pair cable) – which should provide rapid good speed, then assemble the machine as a network share and drag the files directly. Otherwise, remove the hard drive, put it as secondary drive on the machine, and drag and drop between the volumes. It would take something like that would be too expensive icybox however.
