Creating an external USB hard drive?

I need one with more memory than usual 60-100 GB is in a stores. How can we build a USB portable hard disk to start the USB port (instead of an adapter) .. or 500GB?

In general the external casing is 2.5 "Variety that derive their power from the USB port. A 2.5" hard drive is also known as a portable high definition.
