Should I format an external hard drive? What does this mean?
Ok I just bought two Maxtor hard drives of 750 GB each, and I am currently waiting for the format, I started at about 4:00, and you're halfway, the other by about one third Road done, and I wonder if you still have to do this? What is the purpose of this format? Is it fair to be faster or is required to use the units? I put some files on the disc as a format before and had no problems copying. I ask because it seems to take forever, and if for nothing that I can avoid it next time.
Formatting the drive writes the structure of system files on the hard disk. This allows the drive to know where the files and not just randomly guess what bits that belong to files. All disks must be formatted and some are formatted plant. You must format the disk if there is a problem with the file system or change the structure of existing partitions. Formatting a disk erase all data on the disk.
