if my hard drive partition to erase everything?

I have a 320 GB hard disk external hard and want to use it to install Snow Leopard on my Dell mini, but my problem is that I'm only 32 GB left free on the disk. I can 8gb 32gb partition that I took off without removing anything?

If you have the space and can add a partition, then do not delete. The new partition will appear as a separate unit. But if you delete a partition, erase everything on that partition.
