Probably not. Not as a boot device. You will need to be able to set the External as a boot device. Does you BIOS support that?

Replacing the HD is easy and cheap.

Or you could boot from a CD/DVD. Look into Knoppix LiveCD. It is a version of Linux that boots from CD/DVD. Works great.
