can anyone help me when my computer’s disk drive is spoilt.?

when ever i insert a disk, the computer lags awhile and when it sort of not lag i double click the disk drive but found that it cannot be used it is a window XP i wanted it to be upgraded to window Vista so i used another PC and insert the disk and transfer to my external hard disk and i found difficulty downloading after i key in the serial code and i confirm the serial code cant be wrong. could anyone help?
