how to use an external hard drive as a dvr expander?

I have a 250GB Free Agent GO drive and a dish network 522 dvr there is a usb port on the back but it doesn’t work with the hard drive is there any way to hack the dvr so the usb port will work with the hard drive so that i can use it as an expander? please help.

I think the extender functionality is only supported on the 6xx and 7xx models. Check the Dish web site for details.
