Hello, there is nothing wrong, if you leave an external hard drive plugged in all the time just like the way we leave our printers, scanners, mouse, modem and any other external devices plugged in all the time, there are few exceptions in odd times, you may like to do the follwoing steps:
* if computer freezes or crash, you may like to unplug your external hard drive including any other external devices and shut down your computer by pushing the power button if yo have no option to shut it offf, restart and plug back
* if your external hard drive is not responding, unplug everything and have computer restart, plug only external hard drive first and check if it is working, because problem could be with some of other device.
