External Hard Drives! External Hard Drive or External Desktop Hard Drive External?

I'm looking to buy an external hard drive for backups of things on my laptop and desktop computer. I have some questions: 1) Should I buy a portable hard drive (if you can use a USB port – but the maximum space because it is 500 GB) hard disk or desktop (adapter required – and the maximum is 1 for this TB)? I usually do I use at home to save things, but the idea of having a laptop looks like a hand. Is there nothing like the power adapter the most reliable? But I want a reliable usually die with all my data on it. 2) Which brand of hard drive do you recommend? I made some research and it seems that WD is very good but then it is apparently Seagate. There is also an HP one? Again I just want a reliable brand! Thank you:) But this is adapter not less reliable laptop?
